Welcome to our website. I am Dr. Craig Castanet, D.C., the founder and clinical director of Backstrong Non-Surgical Rehab Clinic. I wrote the content of this website. Professionally, I am a 1986 graduate of the Palmer College of Chiropractic-West, in California. I have been licensed in California, Florida and Georgia. I maintain the Georgia license, only, presently. I have 21 years clinical experience- 18 years in an orthopedic and physical medicine practice participating in the treatment of 35,000 patients. I am certified in physiotherapy, functional capacity evaluations, Medx spinal rehabilitation, whiplash and brain traumatology, active release techniques and have conducted more than 1,000 nerve conduction studies using conventional NCV techniques. I have also performed over 100 FCE's.

I developed an interest in Chiropractic after receiving chiropractic treatment for a back injury in 1978. During my chiropractic education I herniated two lumbar discs from weight training. At that time, 1983, I found no effective treatment and eschewed surgery. I lived with chronic, unrelenting pain for 6 years, limping out of the office at the end of every workday. I tried the Medx spinal rehab for my problem back in 1987 when it was first invented. I couldn't tolerate it with my disc herniations.
Finally in 1989 I learned of, and chose to undergo, a minimally invasive surgical procedure called "percutaneous discectomy" which relieved me of my constant pain. (I am not "anti-surgery" or "anti-injection". I do object to the prevailing absence of non-surgical spinal decompression in the treatment algorithm for spinal patients. This results in premature surgeries and lives of chronic pain). My pain subsided to an intermittent, daily pain instead of unrelenting, daily pain but my function and mobility remained very limited in my low back.
Subsequently, in 1991, our orthopedic clinic procured the Medx spinal rehab machines. I did a brief course of rehab using the Medx lumbar extension tool. It provided dramatic improvement in my range of motion and tolerance for activities with each successive treatment. As my strength improved, my sitting tolerance and tolerance for other activities improved dramatically. Soon my pain essentially resolved.
I have used the Medx rehab tool, one-on-one, tens of thousands of times with patients since that time. It is the best clinical treatment tool for low back rehab extant, so long as disc pathology and pain doesn't prove an impediment. In fact, I assert that it is the only tool for low back rehab that actually strengthens or "stabilizes" the low back. To my knowledge, no other clinical therapeutic tool isolates, quantifies and rehabilitates the lumbar spine.
"Core Stabilization" of the spine is a popular buzz phrase now in health care. It is an appropriate concept and a desirable objective but, I think a compromised pursuit without the Medx tool for the low back. However, as in my case, Medx "core stabilization" is sometimes ineffective to address serious, symptomatic disc pathology, e.g. herniations.
I have a deep personal and professional interest in chronic low back pain patients. The new spinal disc decompression technology is a revolutionary gift to humanity- in desperate need of better spinal treatment. After my due diligence, I am convinced that Spinemed's decompression table is the finest extant.
My mission at Backstrong is two-fold: First, to help individual patients obtain better treatment outcomes. Secondly, to improve the way that health care professionals are treating most chronic back and neck problems. My assertion is that our present treatment algorithm for patients with back and neck pain is sub-optimal. And that the earlier inclusion of spinal decompression and Medx strengthening is appropriate. In this respect, I think healthcare is failing patients with such problems. It is a failure of insight and judgment in my opinion. I would love to be able to help you with your back or neck problem. Sincerely, Craig Castanet, D.C.
