LONGER MESSAGE: Why am I sending this to you? People are right to take fish oil for health benefits. But the best way to take the most fish oil, at the best price, it to take it in liquid form – not those gelatin capsules. They contain too little fish oil, for too much money. The link, above, will show you the best-priced fish oil I’ve found – about $20 for a bottle of 16 ounces – lemon-flavored. I take a tablespoon daily.

Just in case you don’t know, or recall exactly, why fish oil is good for you, here is a brief primer:

Most diseases are driven or mediated by the process of inflammation. You know that people have inflammation when they have an injury. But what’s less appreciated, is that our bodies are always in a state of inflammation – it just isn’t perceptible to us. And it isn’t as a consequence of an identifiable injury. But, microscopically, our body is in a state of inflammation.

We should strive to keep our bodily inflammation as low as possible. The challenge is that our diets have changed over thousands of years, and especially over the last 100 years. Fish oils have fats, called omega 3 fatty acids; these are anti-inflammatory. Most of what we eat, including foods and fats have omega 6 fatty acids; these are “pro-inflammatory”. Thousands of years ago, our diets resulted in a 1:1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids. This resulted in a lower inflammatory status of our bodies. Today, the ratio is1:25 in favor of omega 6 inflammatory acids.

For short and long-term health, we must change and supplement our diets toward the 1:1 ratio we had. In 1900 our ratio was 4:1 in favor of omega 6 fatty acids; not ideal, but not as bad as today.

The way to improve this, is to familiarize yourself, generally, with which foods are “pro-inflammatory” and “anti-inflammatory”. Search the topic, via Google, and see for yourself. The fish oils are an effort to compensate for our pro-inflammatory diets. But you should reduce your intake of pro-inflammatory foods too.

By the way, the manifestations of our pro-inflammatory status is reported to be very broad, from heart disease to joint pain to cognitive “fog”.

We hope you’re all doing reasonably well.

Best wishes,

Dr. Castanet and staff

This video reviews a lumbar MRI scan to explain/inform patients about some of the typical pathology/problems noted on a low back MRI scan. Dr. Castanet shows you some pathology, explains the nature of it and why spinal decompression is an essential component to rational treatment for such problems. Most painful low back lesions are due to compression of the discs, nerves and joints. Spinal decompression provides direct treatment of this degenerative process.

Dr. Castanet explains how physical therapy using the Medx lumbar extension tool works to improve strength and function. Of course, the purpose of all physical therapy is to improve pain and disability as much as possible. This rehabilitation tool represents the best method for improving strength and function for patients with chronic low back pain. On this machine, we can measure a patient’s range of motion and strength, compare them to normative data, rehabiliate any functional losses, improve pain and function and, most importantly, make patients happy again.

In this video, Dr. Castanet shows you a patient receiving spinal decompression as treatment. He explains how it works and why it works to improve pain and disability. It is almost always worth trying with patients, unless some absolute contraindication exists. Dr. Castanet uses this treatment liberally, i.e. with almost all patients, because it helps what ails human spines- the progressive, compressive, degenerative changes that give rise to pain and disability. Keep in mind, that Dr. Castanet has excellent working relationships with pain physicians and neurosurgeons and refers to these specialist when appropriate. But spinal decompression should be used before or after conventional physical therapy, injections or surgery have failed to give satisfactory results.

This informative video explains a number of suggestions for “managing” your low back pain, including how to do different activities of daily living, how to do some exercises for your low back and the rationale for these things. At Backstrong, in Atlanta, we try our best to educate patients about their problems by showing them their MRI scan results, explaining their pathology and educating them. We want patients to get better and stay better as long as possible. An informed patient does better. An uninformed patient is more likely to have recurrent problems and be unhappy with their problems. All patients, non-surgical and surgical, need to understand as much as possible about their problems.

In this video, Dr. Castanet shows you a patient performing strengthening physical therapy for the neck muscles that turn/rotate the neck. This is a critical function in the neck and only 25 of these machines exist in the world- they are a collectors item. For many patients, turning their neck is a painful problem and this machine improves that function and reduces the pain associated with that movement. This is a wonderful exercise for patients with persistent neck pain and limited range of motion.
